  • I know w need a change-one that gets back to more natural ways of farming,not using geneically changed plants[Franknfoods] to repel the effect of the poisons the use to kill the weeds and insects-but these foods are causing irrevocable damage to our eco-system and us.Our bodies don’t recognize the change and start atacking he franken foods like an Allergen.I am allegic to corn,soy,carrots,possibly oats no and egg whites.Who knows what else.It’s really hard to find safe food for for me.This is one of the reasons I support this.

  • I am appalled at the food that this country is producing, promoting and selling. The Western diet is unhealthy and is causing health issues around the world. Please do something, because if you don’t misinformed Americans will continue to eat chemical-filled, unhealthy food that is grown using methods that are bad for our planet. Americans deserve better than that!

    In the note to distant future, if not now, hunger may become a direct force in our lives. This is one of the reasons that I am a member of the USDA Food and Nutriton Service’s Outreach programs. Us the link above to find out how you and your community can benefit by using SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly Food Stamps) in your Farmer’s Market. • would also like to see more support of small scale agriculture. Regulations are needed for large producers but are often a burden on smaller, local, diversified farms. Often we are not able to legally sell our products or are prohibited from doing so by the high costs of dealing with the USDA. The USDA needs to stop fighting small farms and become their allies, which means they will have to take their hands out of the pockets of the big producers. We should push for more transparency in the government regulatory agencies as well.

  • Our food system should be organic, state of the art, sustainable, small scale, decentralized, and diverse. It should not be controlled by the FDA and the big Ag and big Pharma companies.

    — Julia TenEyck on Dec 26, 2010

  • when is the government going to wake up? health costs far outway the cost of ensuring that we eat the right foods that havent been contaminated by dyes, pestisides, genetic changes, etc.

    — Camille Ellsworth on Dec 7, 2010

  • I support sustainable farming practices with my dollar and believe that all people have a right to know exactly what is in the food and how it is being grown/produced through proper labeling.

  • As part of the other ninty percent, this declaration comes at a time when it is of the utmost importance. All current indications show us that a possitive paradigm shift is essential in our food and social culture.

The Future

This draft declaration was publicly unveiled on August 28th in the rotunda of San Francisco’s City Hall and posted here for 90 days of comments.

The purpose of this comment period was

  1. to test and hone document language to ensure it will be understood by any person with sufficient interest to read it, and
  2. to confirm that the declaration language captures a broad national consensus by stakeholders in the food and agriculture system.

The comment period ended on November 30, 2008 and the drafting team is reviewing the comments in order to create the final document.

The final document is scheduled for completion in January 2009. At that point, Roots of Change (ROC), Slow Food, Food and Water Watch, Edible Communities, Watershed Media, and any other interested NGOs and individuals will then turn to three tasks:

  1. a team of Web 2.0 experts will run a Web-based viral campaign to collect hundreds of thousands of endorsements;
  2. a team of policy experts will develop a specific policy agenda on food and agriculture that will emerge from the principles contained in the declaration;
  3. a team of organizers representing a broad set of constituents will plan an event in Washington DC for fall 2009, where the Declaration and the policy agenda will be delivered to policy makers. The event is proposed to be the official launch of the next effort to improve federal food and agriculture policy.
